Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster
Sometimes my kids will ask about something that happened last week. Or maybe yesterday. Or two hours ago. What do you think about the message from Sunday evening when Pastor brought up so-and-so? When you talked to Jane yesterday, what time did she tell you I was to meet her this evening? What did you have for breakfast this morning? Ahhh. Uhm. I don't know. I don't remember. In light of that, it's a bit strange when it's the anniversary of something big that happened to our nation or to the world twenty or thirty or forty years ago. (oh, my!) I seem to remember every detail. I wonder why that is? This morning was such an anniversary. Today is the thirtieth anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger disaster. Thirty years! I was listening as they talked about it on the news this morning. And immediately I was back there. I was teaching kindergarten at my home church back then. I can see every detail of my big homey classroom right off of the fellowship hall. Mine was the only classroom in that area. Good thing. Sometimes I got a little 'involved' in my teaching. Okay, so maybe I acted out the Bible story on occasion. I can be a lion on top of a desk if need be. You should hear me roar, lol! Okay for little eyes and ears, but not great for an adult passerby. Anyway, I remember I was in the front of the class teaching or drilling or something when my pastor's wife came to the door and called me out. She was like a mom to me and my very dear friend. I followed her over to an office with a tv as she told me what had happened, and we watched the explosion as it replayed over and over again. We cried at the horror of it. The high school students had been watching it live. Christa McAuliffe was onboard, and was to have been the first teacher in space. Big doings. And then, suddenly, seven lives were lost. Out into eternity with not a moment to prepare. Or to pray. And we wondered aloud how many of them had trusted Christ during their shortened lives. Because instantly, it was too late. And that's the way it is with this life. You just never know what the next moment holds. The Bible says in James 4:14, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." If you have never trusted Jesus for the forgiveness of your sin, please do so today. You can learn how here. You have no promise of tomorrow. 2 Corinthians 6:2 tells us, "...behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." Okay, so now that I think about it, I have no idea who was watching my kids when I went off to see the news. Surely someone. So, maybe I don't remember every little thing. :)
